Online Metronome
Accents: tap a beat to change it (strong · group · normal · silent)
Practice aid. Pitch follows A4 = 440 Hz (ISO 16:1975) in equal temperament; clicks are timed on the audio clock, and your device adds a fixed output delay. Checked 2026-10-23. ISO 16:1975 · Disclaimer
Set the tempo with − and +, the slider or Tap. Space starts and stops. Clicks are scheduled on the audio clock, not a JavaScript timer, so they stay steady even when the page is busy.
How to use the metronome
Set the tempo, choose the time signature, press Start. Tap a beat square to cycle it through strong, group accent, normal and silent. "Clicks per beat" adds eighths, triplets or sixteenths between the beats.
For odd meters choose 5/8, 7/8 or another x/8 signature and pick the grouping: 7/8 can be felt as 2+2+3, 2+3+2 or 3+2+2. Each group starts with a softer accent so you hear where it begins.
Speed trainer
Turn on the speed trainer to raise the tempo by a set number of BPM every few bars, for example from 80 to 120 BPM, +4 every 4 bars. Each new tempo starts exactly on a bar line.
How accurate is it?
Each click is placed on the sound card's own clock about 0.1 s ahead of time. In our tests (10 minutes at 120 BPM with a simulated timer that runs up to 90 ms late), every click landed within a microsecond of its ideal time. Your speakers or Bluetooth headphones add a delay, but it is the same for every click, so the beat stays even.
Questions
- What BPM should I practise at?
- Start where you can play the passage without mistakes, often 60–80 BPM, and raise it by 4–8 BPM once it feels easy. The speed trainer does this for you.
- How do I find the tempo of a song?
- Press Tap (or T) on every beat while the song plays. After four taps the BPM shows the average of your last taps.
- How does the metronome count 6/8?
- In 6/8 each click is an eighth note, grouped 3+3 with an accent on 1 and a lighter accent on 4. For a slow 6/8 you may prefer 2 beats with triplet clicks.
- Does it keep time in a background tab?
- Yes. When the tab is hidden the browser slows its timers, so the metronome schedules 1.5 s ahead instead of 0.1 s.
