Practice aid. Pitch follows A4 = 440 Hz (ISO 16:1975) in equal temperament; clicks are timed on the audio clock, and your device adds a fixed output delay. Checked 2026-10-23. ISO 16:1975 · Disclaimer

Big keys for touch screens, letters printed on every key, sustain on Space. The sound is synthesised, so the first note plays at once.

How to play the virtual piano with your computer keyboard

The bottom row Z X C V B N M plays the white keys from C to B; S D G H J are the black keys between them. The row Q W E R T Y U plays the next octave up, with 2 3 5 6 7 as its black keys. That gives you two full octaves without touching the mouse.

Hold Space for the sustain pedal. Use the octave buttons (or the arrow keys) to move both rows up or down. On a phone, turn it sideways to see more keys.

Which note is which

Every white key group repeats every 12 keys: the C sits just left of a pair of black keys, the F just left of a group of three. Middle C (C4) is marked on the keyboard; it vibrates at 261.63 Hz. The A above it is the tuning note, 440 Hz.

How the sound is made

There are no recorded samples. Each key is built from up to 32 overtones that ring and fade the way a piano string does: the upper overtones die first, bass notes ring for up to ten seconds, and two strings per note beat gently against each other. The result is generated in your browser the first time you press a key.

Questions

Can I play the virtual piano with my computer keyboard?
Yes. Z to M are the white keys of the lower octave, Q to U the upper octave, and the number and middle rows give the black keys. The letters are printed on the keys.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Keys are at least 44 px wide on a phone. Hold the phone sideways for more keys, or use the octave buttons. Several fingers can play at once.
Why is there no sound?
Browsers only start audio after you touch the page. Press any key once. On iPhone, also check that the silent switch is off.
How many keys does it have?
From 1 to 5 octaves on screen (you pick), and the full 88-key range A0 to C8 through the octave buttons.
